- The 1996 prototype Skarloey features Percy's face, a round roof, and flat magnets.
- In the 1996 yearbook, a prototype Skarloey is seen with James's face.
- Skarloey never had a cab ledge despite being introduced in 1996 when most other engines still had cab ledges.
- Skarloey is the first steam engine produced to receive front windows.
- Skarloey was one of the many engines recalled for lead paint in 2007.
- Despite having a redesign in 2011, Skarloey did not receive painted eyes until the following year, making 2011 Skarloey one of the last characters introduced to not have painted eyes.
