Proteus is a legendary engine whose "magic lamp" was said to grant wishes to anyone that found it. Pressing the button on his cab lights his lamp up, and pressing it again turns the light off.

Proteus was a very old engine from the hills of Sodor with a lamp that was so bright you could see it for miles. Legend has it that the lamp was magic and if any engine ever found it, their wishes would come true.

- Sir Handel and Proteus share the same basis in the television series, but their Wooden Railway versions differ in many regards, namely their size. This design quirk also occurs between Rheneas and Smudger.
